Old Orchard Beach

Old Orchard Beach is perhaps best known for its wide sand beach.  Though it may be the one of the most popular ones in Maine, at 7 miles long, it offers plenty of space for everyone.  Thanks to the beach, the town has been a tourist destination since 1631.  In recent years, much of the summer visitors have been French Canadian.

There are plenty of activities to be found seaside.  The pier features souvenir shops, a nightclub and eateries.  The Palace Playland, an amusement park that has been operational for over a hundred years, is now one of the last oceanside parks of its time in New England.  There are regular events organized by the Old Orchard community, often more than one activity or festival per month from sporting events to arts and crafts fairs.  Several of these events celebrate the beach.  There’s the Annual Family Sand Sculpture Contest or the Annual Lobster Dip on New Year’s Day where participants plunge themselves in the freezing ocean.

Old Orchard is perfect for the avid golfer, with no less than ten courses within 45 minutes of the town.  Nature aficionados will also find plenty to love in and around Old Orchard.  There’s kayaking, jet skiing, whitewater rafting, camping, whale watching…  Ferry Beach State Park is less than ten minutes away for a hike or just an afternoon picnic.  Scarborough Marsh, the largest salt marsh in Maine, is one of the prime bird watching spots on the Northeast coast.  Those looking for a space for reflection and spiritual growth may well find it with Ocean Park, an interfaith community housed in historic buildings minutes from the beach.

Opportunities for drives abound from trips to any of the nearby lighthouses including Portland Headlight, the oldest in Maine, to the village of Ogunquit, home to many artists.  It’s a quick drive to Portland (25 minutes), Saco (10 minutes) or Biddeford (15 minutes), where there’s plenty more to do.  For trips further away, Amtrak trains comes directly into town several times a day.
