West End

The West End is a neighborhood of Portland known for its well-preserved Victorian architecture.  Several of the historic houses in the neighborhood are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.  One such property is the Harrison Bird Brown House, which is named after the painter to whom it had once belonged.  Brown, who in his lifetime was one of Portland’s most famous painters, completed much of his work in the home studio.

The Western Promenade, which runs along the edge of the neighborhood, is itself on the National Register of Historic Places.  A public park, it is great place for walking, biking, playing Frisbee or maybe just picnicking.  It is also one of the venues for the Summer in the Parks Concerts series.  The concerts are free and feature a variety of local musicians.

The neighborhood is the site of two of the state’s largest hospitals.  The Mercy Hospital is the fourth largest in the state, while the Maine Medical Center is the largest in northern New England.  The MMC, a teaching university, has been ranked number one hospital in the state by US News and been commended as “high-performing” in eight adult specialties.  The Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital, a part of the MMC, has been ranked within the top 25 children’s hospitals in the nation.

Portland’s art district overlaps with the neighborhood, making the West End the perfect starting point for a First Friday Art Walk.  This monthly event throws open the doors of a variety of art-centered venues such as museums, galleries and artist studios and also other spaces such as boutiques, cafes and bookstores.  It is an opportunity for participants to engage with the Portland art world in a casual, relaxed atmosphere.  West End residents will definitely want a membership to the Portland Museum of Art, which is just minutes away.  Members get free unlimited access for the year in addition to several other perks.  The PMA was lauded as “one of the best medium-size museums in New England” by the Boston Globe.

Less than ten minutes away from the Old Port, the culinary center of a food-obsessed city, residents of the West End will never run out of restaurants to choose from.  For something even closer to home, Caiola’s might be the perfect choice.  With its cozy atmosphere and hearty fare, which favors fresh, local ingredients, it’s the quintessential neighborhood restaurant.
