The Presumpcot River runs through the center of the small city of Westbrook.  Its position in the community’s consciousness is just as central.  The Main Street, where many of the city’s restaurants and shops are located, runs alongside it.  One of the main parks in Westbrook, the Riverbank Park, is, as its name suggests, situated by the river.  The park is the perfect spot for an afternoon walk or a weekend picnic.  The Westbrook River Walk is another great option for a scenic stroll—there are views of the river of course but also of various old mill properties.  The river’s two major falls—the Saccarappa Falls and the Congin Falls—offer residents kayaking and rafting opportunities right in their own city.

It is thanks to these falls and the water power they provided that Westbrook became a host for several mills in the past.  The city was once best known for the S. D. Warren Paper Mill.  Much smaller than before, the mill is now known as Sappi Ltd.’s Westbrook Paper Mill and R&D Center.  The city is currently the headquarters for IDEXX Laboratories, a multinational corporation supplying diagnostic products and services.

There is plenty to do in Westbrook—several skating rinks, public pools, lots of trails to explore, even a snowmobile club (the Westbrook Trail Blazes)…  Children will love the Peek-a-boo Children’s Center.  The center offers a variety of toys, wooden structures, and themed rooms for play.  There’s even an enclosed trampoline and a paint wall.  Peek-a-boo also hosts all kinds of classes, playgroups and afterschool enrichment programs.  Afterward an play session, stop over at the Catbird Creamery for some freshly made ice cream.  There are plenty of creative flavors to try like Strawberry Balsamic, Tamari Caramel or Furious George (banana with hot peppers) and you can create your own custom ice-cream sandwiches too.  Even the ice-cream cones are homemade!

Westbrook’s proximity to Portland means that its residents have full access to all the advantages of Maine’s largest city.  With around 230 restaurants, Portland is one of the cities with the most restaurants per capita in the nation and it’s just a twenty-minute drive away!  Closer still, the Portland International Jetport is the busiest airport of Maine and one of the most affordable in New England.
