Munjoy Hill - East End

Munjoy Hill – East End is a community-oriented neighborhood of Portland.  Snug within the curve of the Eastern Promenade park, Munjoy Hill overlooks Casco Bay as well as downtown Portland.  The best view, of course, is from the top of the Portland Observatory.  The only remaining maritime signal station in the nation, it now also houses a museum.

Nothing brings a neighborhood together quite like a market and Rosemont Market is a quintessential community gathering spot.  Events such as wine tastings and block parties are regularly held there.  It prides itself on carrying a variety of locally sourced produce and artisanal foods, making it just the place for a quick bite or a hearty cup of soup.  It’s not just the Rosemont Market—the community as a whole nurtures a multitude of small, independently-run businesses.

The walkability of the neighborhood certainly contributes to its communal feeling.  One can get almost anywhere on foot, giving the Hill a stellar WalkScore of 83.  The hilly terrain is ideal for biking as well.  The proximity of the Eastern Promenade, one of Portland’s best-loved parks, offers many more options for outdoor activities from 5k-trail races (with dogs!) to picnics on the Eastern Promenade Trail, which overlooks the ocean.  And on the 4th of July, all of Portland gathers there for the 4th of July fireworks.

East End Beach, the only public beach of the city, is next to the Promenade.  Mackworth Island and Fort Gorges are just a quick kayak trip away.  Dog owners will be glad to know they can take their four-legged friends for late-afternoon walks on the beach.

Art lovers of Munjoy gather at the St. Lawrence Arts Center, which started out as a Congregationalist church in 1897.  It was renovated and reopened as a performing arts venue in 2001.  Its resident company, Good Theater, holds productions there regularly.  The younger members of the community can enroll at the neighborhood preschool, the Schoolhouse, whose curriculum is based on arts-friendly approaches like the Montessori and Waldorf programs.

Residents love their Hill and with events cropping up regularly like the MunjFest and the We Love Munjoy Hill Fest, it’s clear they’re not shy about it.
